Growing on YouTube

How to grow on YouTube.

Growth is not one trick. It is a chain: the right people choose the video, it keeps them satisfied, and the next step is obvious. Here is the route in order, with the guide that goes deeper on each step.

The route

Six steps, in order.

The order follows the way Jake Trinder runs a channel in his training talk and the Views To Clients method. Each step links to the page that covers it in full.

Step 1

Choose ideas with evidence

Look for proof that the right viewers already choose a subject, by studying videos that beat their own channel’s normal across the niche and the adjacent niches. Knowing your audience does not prove they will choose the subject on YouTube.

“Pre-publish research is still a hypothesis. The market gets the final vote.”Jake, 33:48

Step 2

Package one promise

The right person must recognise at a glance that the video is for them. The title and thumbnail make one promise together. Ideas that do not land

“The title and thumbnail make one promise together.”Jake, 11:00

Step 3

Open with promise, proof and plan

After the click, the viewer asks whether they chose the right video. Restate what they clicked for, give a reason to trust you and show where the video is going. Viewers leaving early

“Promise, proof, plan.”Jake, 14:58

Step 4

Aim for viewer satisfaction

Jake’s aim is the right viewers feeling satisfied, because that gives YouTube the evidence to show the video to more people like them. Falling satisfaction

“The goal of every video is viewer satisfaction, not retention.”Jake, 17:51

Step 5

Make the next step obvious

The normal call to action interrupts the video. Ask what this viewer naturally needs next, such as a calculator, scorecard or template. Video to customer

“The video does not have to make the whole sale. It just has to make the next useful step obvious.”Jake, 23:49

Step 6

Measure, then fix one stage

Give every video link a tracking value and read the results every week. Every stage is a share of the one before, so one weak stage caps the rest. Fix that one, measure again. The full equation

Where to start

Find the weakest stage first.

You do not need to do all six at once. Jake’s method is to map the stages, find the one holding results back, change that one thing and measure again; the weakest stage is usually not the one you expect. One viral video is a clue, not proof, and a new video needs time before it counts as evidence. If your channel is new or small, begin with the free tools and video guides; if it is established, the strategy call will show which stage to fix first.

Check your channel

Six questions to ask of your own videos.

  • What evidence do I have that the right viewers already choose this subject?
  • Does the title and thumbnail make one promise to one kind of person?
  • Does the opening restate the promise, give proof and show the plan?
  • Would the right viewer feel satisfied when the video ends?
  • What is the most useful next step I offer, and does it interrupt the video?
  • Can I tell which video produced which enquiry or sale?

Questions

Common questions.

How do I grow on YouTube?

Work the chain in order: choose ideas the right viewers already choose, package one promise, open with promise, proof and plan, aim for viewer satisfaction, make the next step obvious, and measure to find the weakest stage. Fix that stage, then measure again.

What matters most for growth?

The weakest stage in the chain, because every stage is a share of the one before. It is usually not the one you expect, so measure before deciding.

How do I grow a new YouTube channel?

Start with Jake’s free tools and video guides. Views To Clients works with established channels and businesses, and the strategy call will say whether yours is ready.

How long does it take to grow?

It depends on the channel and the work. Jake notes that a new video needs time before it counts as evidence, and the published results each state their own time frame and basis.

Do I need paid ads to grow?

No. Every result Views To Clients publishes came from published videos, organically.

Is growth about views or about customers?

For a business, customers. One million irrelevant views can be worth less than ten thousand from the exact market you want, so the aim is the right viewers, then a next step, then a lead.
