What a YouTube strategist actually does

The strategist owns the results logic of a channel: selecting the strongest opportunities, casting the creative vision, helping the client and the delivery team execute it properly, reading performance and turning each useful signal into a better next decision. The north star is channel performance against the client’s agreed objective: qualified demand, leads, revenue, authority, audience growth or brand reach.

In Jake’s words, it is the highest-leverage role in the whole operation: the person making the decisions that have the biggest influence on results. It is also, as he has said many times on his channel, the role the industry has a severe shortage of.

  • ResearchMarket research, positioning and channel direction, with high-conviction ideas before anything is recorded.
  • PromiseThe viewer promise and creative reasoning behind each video, briefed to the scriptwriter, thumbnail designer, editor and client.
  • PackagingApproval of the title and thumbnail concept for audience and strategic fit before design is treated as final.
  • ReviewEarly, follow-up, weekly and monthly performance reviews: inspect the signals, change one controllable variable only where there is a credible diagnosis.
  • StandardIntervene when scripting, packaging or editing weakens the strategy, and raise repeat gaps so the whole team improves.

How the pathway works

Jake trains strategists the way he trains his own team: a tight feedback loop on real work. He has described taking people from zero to producing ideas good enough to use with paying clients in weeks, because the person teaching is the person who runs the channels.

Training

The method, taught directly: adjacent-niche research, outliers, demand, packaging, the Views To Clients equation.

Practice and assessment

Real exercises on real channels, with feedback against the standard the V2C team works to. You see where your judgement is strong and where it isn’t yet.

Selective recruitment

The strongest strategists are invited to work on V2C client channels. Training access never implies a job or access to client accounts; the delivery team stays accountable for client work.

“There’s just simply not enough good YouTube strategists out there. My goal is to help create this talent so that we can actually hire at our own company.” Jake, How YouTube Changed My Life

An example exercise from the method

Exercise 1: pick any business channel with 20+ uploads. Find its three best-performing videos against its own average and write the promise each title makes in one sentence. Then name the stage in the Views To Clients equation you think is most likely holding the channel back, say what public evidence points to it, and list the private numbers you would need to test it.
