Hiring a YouTube strategist

Is it time to hire a YouTube strategist?

A strategist earns their place when the channel has views but the business has no clear result from them. Here are six signs it is time, when it is too early, and what to ask before you hire.

The signs

Six signs.

These are drawn from the way Jake Trinder diagnoses a business channel in his training talk and his video on turning views into clients.

Sign 1

You get views but not customers

If the channel is watched and nothing arrives in the inbox, the weak stage is usually after the view. A strategist maps every stage from published video to cash and finds the one that is leaking.

Sign 2

You cannot tell which video produced a lead

YouTube Analytics shows what happened on YouTube, not which video created a qualified call or what that buyer paid. Tracking each video through to the sale is part of the strategist’s job.

Sign 3

Your ideas come from what you know, not from evidence

Knowing your audience does not prove they will choose the subject on YouTube. A strategist looks for proof of demand before anything is recorded.

“Knowing your audience matters, but it does not prove that they will choose the subject on YouTube.”Jake, 2:17

Sign 4

Good videos, weak clicks

When the right people do not choose the video, the problem is the packaging. The title and thumbnail have to make one promise together.

Sign 6

The channel has outgrown one person or a small team

A channel can reach a point where a single person or a small team cannot hit the targets or meet the founder’s expectations: the research, scripting, packaging, publishing and measurement are more than they can carry at the standard needed. That is when a strategist leading a full team earns their place.

Are you ready?

Hiring a strategist solves a strategy problem, not every problem.

Check six things first: a clear customer and offer, evidence that YouTube can reach that audience, access to someone with real expertise, capacity to produce the videos, the ability to handle the enquiries that arrive, and a realistic learning period. If the offer is unclear, fix that first. If the strategy is sound but production is the bottleneck, you need production capacity, such as an editor or an agency. If you cannot say what to make or why results are weak, that is the strategist’s job. Views To Clients works with established channels and businesses; if yours is new or small, Jake’s free tools and video guides are a good place to start, and the strategy call will say whether you are ready.

What to ask

Questions to put to any strategist.

  • How will you decide which videos to make, and what evidence will you use?
  • How will you tell me which video produced which lead or sale?
  • Who does the work, and who will I speak to?
  • What will I be asked to do, and how much of my time does it take?
  • Can I see results with the basis for each figure stated?

Questions

Common questions.

When should I hire a YouTube strategist?

When the channel gets views but the business cannot point to a result from them, when you cannot tell which video produced a lead, when you want the whole process handled, or when one person or a small team can no longer hit the targets or meet the founder’s expectations. If the channel is new or the offer is not yet clear, the free tools and guides are the place to start, or ask on the strategy call whether you are ready.

Is it worth hiring a YouTube strategist?

It is when the strategist connects each video to calls and revenue instead of reporting views alone. Ask how they will track that, and ask to see results with the basis for each figure.

Can I hire a YouTube strategist directly?

Yes, directly or through an agency where the strategist leads a team that does the work. Views To Clients is Jake’s agency and every new client is onboarded by Jake personally.

How much does a YouTube strategist cost?

It depends on the customer and the work involved, so Views To Clients has no price list. It is discussed on a free 30-minute strategy call, and you leave with a channel plan whether or not you work together.

What is the difference between a strategist, a consultant and an agency?

A strategist owns the channel’s results logic, a consultant advises on it, and an agency such as Views To Clients also does the work: research, scripts, editing, thumbnails and publishing.

Who does Views To Clients work with?

Founders, senior leaders, brands and high-profile people, anywhere in the world, with established channels or businesses. The work is done online.
